Cosmic Latte, 2016
Abschlussjahr: 2016
Stemming from a study by Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry at Johns Hopkins University, the average colour of the universe came from examining spectral analysis of star formations from 200,000 different galaxies. Initially thought to be a mint-green/turquoise, they soon realised that their data included shades, or depth. The data was corrected – sans depth – and a beige value was found to be the average colour of the universe. [1]

The colour was discussed in a “Washington Post” article, where Glazebrook jokingly said that he was looking for suggestions for a name, to which several people sent in responses [2]. Peter Drum came up with the name while sitting at a Starbucks drinking a latte and reading the “Post”. Drum noticed that the color of the universe as shown in the “Washington Post” was the same color as his latte [3].

Arbitrarily selecting images from the internet, the Cosmic Latte colour is isolated, and the clusters of colour become the ‘palette’. These forms are cut and collaged with one another – with the works then painted in Cosmic Latte.

Having worked with the correct and incorrect average colour of the universe since 2013, the Diplom takes a different turn. A show in 2013 [4] saw the walls painted in Cosmic Latte, while the sculptures remained ‘unpainted’. Here – conveniently autonomous to a degree – it’s not the surroundings painted but the works.

On the occasion of a sculpture Diplom, these sculptures sit within the garden: the smallest parcel of the world, and yet the totality of the world [5].
